NEW DELHI: A partisan firefight broke out on the first anniversary of the attack on CRPF troopers in Pulwama by Pakistan-backed Jaish-e-Mohammad, with former Congress president Rahul Gandhi asking who benefited the most from the February 14 terror attack.
“Today, as we remember our 40 CRPF martyrs in the Pulwama attack, let us ask: 1. Who benefited the most from the attack? 2. What is the outcome of the inquiry into the attack? 3. Who in the BJP government has yet been held accountable for the security lapses that allowed the attack?” Rahul said on twitter.

The post was read by many in conjunction with the conspiracy theories about the attack and the lament that the death of troopers and IAF’s retaliatory attack on Jaish’s camp in Balakot deep inside Pakistan helped BJP strengthen its “nationalism” plank before the Lok Sabha elections.
The post drew an angry response from BJP. “When the nation is paying homage to martyrs of the dastardly Pulwama attack, Rahul Gandhi, a known sympathiser of LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammad, chooses to target not just the government but security forces as well. Rahul will never question the real culprit, Pakistan. Shame on you Rahul,” said BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao on twitter.

Rahul, however, was joined by CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, who also came out all guns blazing against the government. Paying “heartfelt homage” to the martyrs of the “ghastly terror attack”, he asked what the government had done for the survivors and families of those who laid down their lives for the nation.
While expressing “heartfelt sympathies” for the victims, Yechury said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “who sought votes in the name of Pulwama martyrs, had let down their dependants.”
His colleague Mohammad Salim also attacked the BJP government for the alleged intelligence failure which resulted in 350kg of RDX being smuggled in for the attack on the CRPF convoy in which 40 personnel were killed. Another BJP spokesperson, Shahnawaz Hussain, joined Rao in returning the fire. “This is an insult to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country. Congress has done this in the past as well and people taught them a lesson for this blunder. Rahul Gandhi’s remarks help Pakistan counter India on international platforms,” he said.
